I witnessed history

Shalay Thomas

The big day is finally here - the day we’ve all been anticipating. I’m so overwhelmed with emotion that can’t even think straight. Washington seems to be much colder than New York even though it was snowing back there. The Inauguration was amazing. I can’t believe that I actually witnessed such history. I have never seen that many people before in my life. It had to be over a million people in attendance. When I jumped and looked behind me all I could see was people for miles and miles. It really warmed my heart to see so many people of different ethnicities supporting Mr. Barack Obama. As soon as I heard the words “your 44th president Barack Obama” I instantly broke into tears. My friends just grabbed me and held me. I was so emotional. I kept thinking was this can’t be happening - it was all just so surreal. I am more than proud to say that I have witnessed history first hand.

Crazy drivers

We’re finally here! We all finally made it to New York City, and what a day it was. We had a long four hour flight from Sacramento to Texas for a two hour layover, then we had a two hour flight from Texas to New York.

This city is so much different then what I’m used to. It’s constantly busy and the people out here drive CRAZY. It is pretty cold and snowing. This is actually my first time being in the snow and I love it. So far we’ve seen Ground Zero, Madison Square Garden, and the Macy’s building.

The Macy’s building is HUGE. It takes up a whole city block and its several stories high. We also did a little bit of traveling on the subway as well. The subways here in New York aren’t the same as the ones in Washington though. The subways in Washington are much cleaner. Our journey here is just getting started and it is now only two days away from the big day. I’m so excited!

The big day is here!

So the big day is finally here! The 17th of January - the day we’ve all been waiting for. Still somewhat stressed because I still have a ton of things to do before I leave tonight. We are on a red eye flight at 12:30 a.m. with a 30 minute layover in Houston, Texas. We should arrive in New York around 11 o’clock in the morning.

The weather forecast says its 18 degrees out there but it will feel like two degrees. Were going to be freezing cold, but its all worth it. I’m so excited - the inauguration is only three days away. I don’t think I’m quite emotionally prepared for it yet, though. Everything still doesn’t seem real to me yet. Maybe once I’m actually there witnessing this historic moment in time, it will all set in.

I just can’t believe out of all the people living in Sacramento I’m one of the few that’s going to be witnessing this event. I know people who are willing to pay thousands of dollars just for a ticket to be a part of the 240,000 people in attendance. I am going to be one of the few people with media credentials. This is truly a blessing and just shows me that anything can be done and to never take “no” for an answer. “No” only means to try again.

I’m feeling a little stressed out

Shalay Thomas

I’m feeling a little stressed out about the trip but still excited more than anything. We only have three days to go and I still have a ton to do. Trying to keep up with school and my job is a lot, but its all worth it.

After going to Washington D.C. last weekend, I realized that I am definitely going to need some warmer attire. The thermals and gloves that I had weren’t thick enough. One of my mom’s coworkers recommended that I go to a sporting goods store to buy my thermals and socks. So, tomorrow I’ll make sure to go get all of that.

A dream come true

Shalay Thomas

This past week has been absolutely overwhelming. Every emotion that you can possibly feel has definitely been felt. We were all so excited to hear we are going to the Presidential Inauguration we didn’t know what to do - we all just screamed and cried tears of joy and couldn’t wait to phone home. Then we learned we would be flying out to to attend the inauguration rehearsals because we will be providing video streaming of the event and will have press credentials.

Saturday turned out to be a long day. Our flight was delayed two times and we ended up having to go through extra security screening for some unknown reason. They searched everything, and to top it all off we had a long five hour flight from here to Chicago where we had a thirty minute layover.

Once we got to D.C. no one slept at all. We were so excited to be there, that sleep was the last thing on our minds, although we did regret that once we got to the inauguration rehearsals. Seeing how everything is going to go was so overwhelming. The whole ceremony gave me the chills, and I honestly still can’t believe we were there. I cannot comprehend how close we are going to be to Mr. - soon to be President - Barack Obama! Everything just seems so unreal. I never thought in a million years I would witness anything like this.
